If the rumours are to be believed, Dame Luck is going to smile
on Union Minister of State for Women Development and Child
Welfare Renuka Chowdary very soon.
According to grapevine, the Congress is considering Renuka
Chowdary's name for the post of Vice President of India, after
the term of Bhaironsingh Shekhawat expires later this year.
This, however, will happen if Bharatiya Janata Party proposes
the name of former Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Nazma
Heptullah for the Vice-President's post.
The names of Renuka and Nazma have come to the fore, as both the
Congress and the BJP have reportedly decided to field women
candidates for the Vice President post, keeping in view the
general elections in 2009, wherein empowerment of women would
become a major issue to woo the women electorate. In fact, there
is a talk that even the President's post too would go to women –
the fight could be between Sheela Dixit of the Congress and
Laxmi Sehgal of the Left parties.
If the Congress plans materialise, it would be a cake walk for
Renuka Chowdary, as she has the support of all the UPA partners.
And she will be the first woman, that too from Andhra Pradesh,
to assume the prestigious post. |
